I went to Yom Kippur services with the old JWEC (Jewish Workshop for Education and Culture, or somesuch).

They read "John Melançon" as one of the half-dozen of the original congregation who has passed away. This means a lot to Dad. Not many things would. I felt like running home to tell him.

Reminded of the reasons why i think H may be making a pretty good choice about religion.

Walked there (Edward's Church hall in Saxonville, Framingham) with Zelda in the morning, along the old railroad bed and proposed future bike path. Some beautiful land. And two bridges, nothing but the iron girders, no ties or rails anywhere, that Zelda bravely walked over. We are talking gaping holes. I was impressed.

Walked back home the same way in the afternoon.

Then walked to services again (and arrived too late) for the evening. Helped put away the chairs and tables, and broke the fast a bit earlier than i intended as i'd snacked up to sunset the day before, and the whole fast should be 25 or 26 hours not 24 and a half. H.K. went out of his way to drive Zelda and i home. She sat on my lap, as we had two other passengers.

Made a bit of a sensation, the Melançon boy showing up. How many years was i away? In Europe – Paris, to be precise – last Yom Kippur. I guess Cape Cod the year before that, maybe several years in a row.
